FOGELSON, RASCALS HANG ON FOR SERIES WIN

O’Fallon, MO – Scott Fogelson had to squeak out his first two wins as a starter, not so Thursday night, as the River City Rascals scored just enough runs to outlast the Chillicothe Paints 11-10.

Withstanding back-to-back home runs by Paints’ shortstop Travis Garcia, his second of the night, and right-fielder Travis Storrer to begin the ninth inning, Jonathan Miller got pinch hitter Drew George to bounce out to third with the tying run at third base to end the game.

The Rascals came to Fogelson’s back in the third inning. Luke Barganier executed a hit and run with an RBI single. Brad Hough would then drive in the second run of the inning one batter later.

In the fifth, the Rascals piled on five more. With nobody out, Jeff Miller drove in his first of three RBIs with a double to make it 3-0. Now with runners at second and third and nobody out, Chris Raniere lined out and Greg Stone struck out. The threat looked like it could be over. But Barganier was able to draw a walk to bring up Hough. The second basemen sent a Brian Gartley offering over the left field wall for his first grand slam of the season and ninth home run to put River City up 7-0.

Fogelson had struck out seven through his first four shutout innings, but barely made it out of the fifth. The Paints would go on and score six runs in the inning, sending 10 men to the plate to cut the lead to one.

River City would go on to score a run in the fifth, two in the seventh and one in the eighth as the Paints scored at least one run in each of their final three innings. Garcia hit his first of two home runs with a solo blast in the seventh inning. But it was not enough as the Rascals took two of three from the Paints.

Ryan Ashner and Brian Logan combined to go two innings before turning it over to Miller in the eighth. Miller picked up his fifth save in five tries. Fogelson (4-7) went five innings and struck out nine while allowing six earned for the win. Gartley dropped to 2-9 with the loss, allowing eight runs in 4.1 innings.

River City now sits at 35-37 entering a three game home series against the Florence Freedom starting Friday night at 7:05 p.m.
