BARGANIER, RASCALS WALK OFF AGAIN AGAINST RIVERHAWKS

O’Fallon, MO – Luke Barganier did not want to break the trend. His walk off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning against James Craphin was the River City Rascals fourth straight win at home over the Rockford RiverHawks with the game being decided by one run.

The Rascals won Friday night by a 5-4 score.

For Barganier, it was his first walk off hit of the season.

“I went up there thinking to put the ball in the gap somewhere,” Barganier said. “But I’ll take the home run.”

Craphin challenged him with a first pitch fastball which Barganier did not miss.

“I went up there looking for the first pitch I could drive. He left it right there and I put a good swing on it.”

The Rascals walked off twice against Rockford on their first trip to River City back in May. Brad Hough was the one who did in the RiverHawks both times back then. Hough was the man on base after he was walked for Barganier in this one.

Jake Laber made the start for River City and was handed his third straight no decision. Laber allowed three runs, two home runs, in 7.0 innings.

Robbie Knapp homered off Laber for the game’s first run in the fourth inning. River City then responded to take the lead in the fifth when Ryan Wehrle and Brad Hough provided sacrifice flies.

Laber left in the eighth after Jono Brooks took him deep to tie the game at two and a Jason James single. Pat Evers came in for the Rascals and allowed James to score and one of his own runs to plate on an RBI single from Knapp and RBI ground out by Brandon Cohen to put the game at 4-2.

Garrett Bauer started for Rockford and took the game with him into the eighth before not making it through. Bauer loaded the bases and eventually one run came in after Shawn Balteff walked Greg Stone to force in a run to make it 4-3.

Evers (2-0) picked up the win following the Barganier home run in the ninth. Craphin blew the save opportunity and fell to 3-4.

River City (38-41) sends 6-6 Chris Clem to the mound Saturday night against Rockford. Game time is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Fans are encouraged to come early for the Principal Financial Group Family Fun Fest which begins at 4:00 p.m. outside T.R. Hughes Ballpark.
