LABER LEADS RASCALS PAST GRIZZLIES

O'FALLON, MO – The River City Rascals have had the Gateway Grizzlies number at T.R. Hughes Ballpark this season, plain and simple. Wednesday night was no different as River City won 4-3 over Gateway to improve to 5-0 against their crosstown rivals in O’Fallon.

Jake Laber lasted through his longest outing of his career for the Rascals. Taking a 4-2 lead with him into the ninth inning. The left-hander put the first two on base with a walk and single as Gateway had runners at the corners. That proved to be the end of the line for Laber as Ryan Asher came in from the bullpen.

The first batter that Ashner faced was all-star catcher Charlie Lisk. Ashner struck out Lisk for the first out, and only batter he would face. Brian Logan was then brought in and did allow an RBI single on a groundout, but with two gone, got Carter McQuigg to ground out to third, but not before a little excitement. Ryan Wehrle booted the ball initially, then threw low to Jeff Miller as the first baseman had to dig it out to clinch the win.

For Laber, it was his first win at home as he improved to 3-3 and finished with eight strikeouts. He allowed just one base runner from the second through seventh innings. Logan notched his second save. Derek Blacksher lasted into the eighth but suffered the loss going 7.1 innings and allowed four earned on ten hits, falling to 9-8.

Mike Breyman hit his twenty-first home run for Gateway in the first inning to give the Grizzlies the lead. River City came back with an RBI single by Jeff Miller in the first, RBI double by Phil Laurent in the third, RBI single by Ryan Wehrle in the fourth and RBI single by Brad Hough in the sixth for their four runs. Miller and Hough are now tied for the RBI lead with 56.
