| GRIZZLIES, BREYMAN SHINE IN RAIN SHORTENED AFFAIR
O’FALLON, MO – The Gateway Grizzlies took a rain washed five inning affair 8-4 win over the River City Rascals to close out the home schedule at T.R. Hughes Ballpark, but outcome was not the biggest story to come out of the game. Mike Breyman, the Grizzlies first baseman since the 2004 season, tied and then past Fran Riordan for the Frontier League career hits mark with 450. Breyman tied the record with a three run home run to give the Grizzlies the lead in the top of the fifth inning 5-4. He then broke the record with the extreme opposite after an hour and a half rain delay, on a swinging bunt for an infield single to third. Breyman broke current Kalamazoo Manager Riordan’s record of 449. Commissioner Bill Lee was on hand to congratulate the first baseman. Thursday night’s ballgame was the final time for Breyman to play against the Rascals as he finished his career with 66 hits and a .319 average to go along with 13 home runs and 37 RBIs versus his cross town rivals. River City scored all of its runs in the first two innings. After a two out error by second baseman Alex Kerins kept the first inning alive, the Rascals scored three. Jeff Miller drove in a run with a single. Chris Raniere then came in on a Charlie Lisk past ball. Andrew Sweet then came through with another RBI single to make it 3-0 River City against Grizzlie starter Devin Collins. Phil Laurent made it 4-0 River City with a two out single in the second after a Luke Barganier double. Chris Clem (7-8) started and dropped the decision for the Rascals. Taking a 4-0 lead with him into the third, Clem walked the leadoff batter and after two had scored with nobody out, watched Breyman’s ball just sneak over the left field wall for an opposite field three run dinger to make it 5-4 Grizzlies. The first rain delay came after the Rascals bottom of the fourth inning. After the delay the Grizzlies came back out and scored three more in the top of the fifth to make it 8-4. Shaun Seibert (3-1) came in for Gateway after the break and pitched a scoreless bottom half of the inning to notch the win. The Grizzlies did score two more runs in the top of the sixth inning, including a Charlie Lisk home run. But after the rain caused for a second delay the umpires call the game and washed out the inning. River City finished its regular season 28-23 at home and 7-5 against Gateway to reclaim the Cross Town Clash Trophy. The Rascals finish the season with six games on the road including a Friday night game at Rent One Park against the Southern Illinois Miners.
